The Melo series of sneakers are made by Nike under the Jordan branding. The Air Jordan Melo range of basketball shoe first made their appearance ten years ago when Carmelo Antony, formerly of the Denver Nuggets and now playing for the New York Nicks, signed a sneaker contract with top brand, Jordan. The 2003 basketball shoe was not Carmelo’s own design but took two already popular designs, the Air Jordan 1 and 2, and combined them to produce Carmelo Anthony’s first signature shoe. Since then the Jordan Melocollection has seen strong sales, only being beaten by the ever popular Air Jordan range.
Carmelo Antony has been on board with the Jordan brand now for over ten years. To celebrate this partnership and to pay tribute to the six times NBA all star, the NBA scoring champion and member of the NBA 2004 all rookie team, the original Melo 1.5 signature sneaker is being re-launched on the ten year anniversary of its original release date, 4th January 2014. This is a really big deal at Jordan as these mid tops and indeed this athlete are the very first to be honored with the retro treatment outside of the Air Jordan range.
The men’s Nike Air Jordan Melo 1.5 retro sneakers have been frequently showcased on the court by Carmelo Antony, but until now have been unavailable to purchase by the general public. The classic silhouette remains the same as seen ten years ago and the first color to be rolled out is the original black and university blue combination which was the Denver Nuggets coloring, where Carmelo Antony played for seven and a half years. For obvious reasons, the Denver gold accents have now been replaced with silver. The black Nubuck leather upper is overlaid with university blue smooth leather at both the heel and the toe. The Melo 1.5 sneaker hascustom features personalized to Carmelo Antony’s game which provide better stability, has improved ventilation, a smooth fit and are of a lighter construction. The overlay on the heel is home to the original Carmelo script logo and the Air Jordan Wing logo. The rubber soles come complete with a traction pattern and a pivot point which sports Carmelo Antony’s home town and birthday.
This is the first in a series of releases for the Melo 1.5 retro sneaker with more color combinations to follow, and could lead the way to more retro releases. The Nike Air Jordan Melo 1.5 retro sneaker’s initial offering is being launched on the 4th January 2014 and are available at selected Jordan stockists and Nike’s own online stores.
